Imagine you are part of a select group of Floridians barred from participating in the democratic process. You’re in this exile because of a past mistake, a mistake for which you’ve fully atoned, served time, and paid every dime of every fine and fee.
That’s the plight of roughly 1.7 million ex-felons who are prohibited from automatically regaining their voting rights, making Florida one of only three states stuck in the last century.
Senate Democrats intend to continue pushing to change this, backing constitutional ballot initiatives that let the people decide when punishment ends and second chances begin.
