To showcase cultural sites associated with notable Floridians, the Florida Historical Marker Council has announced a Tom Petty commemorative plaque is coming to Gainesville.

Slated to be unveiled on Oct. 20, the plaque will detail Petty’s Gainesville roots in the park where his career began. Before pairing with industry legends like George Harrison, Bob Dylan, Jeff Lynne and Roy Orbison, Petty was raised in Gainesville and performed throughout north Florida and south Georgia.

Gainesville’s new treasure is likely to attract attention. Resident Melanie Barr, who spearheaded the effort, said people will come from all over the world to pay tribute.
