Celebrating 60 years of American space exploration

by
NASA

America celebrates six decades of space exploration this year. On Jan. 31, 1958, the United States launched its first satellite from Cape Canaveral.

This Monday, Oct. 1, we observe the anniversary of NASA opening for business under the Eisenhower administration. Through NASA, America has led aeronautical research efforts, championed the peaceful exploration of space and worked to make discoveries for the good of humanity.

In 2018, NASA also marks the 50th anniversary of the Apollo program. On Oct. 11, the U.S. Mint will unveil the design for an Apollo 11 commemorative coin, to go on sale in January 2019.
