On March 4, 1824, Florida Territorial Governor William Duval decreed Tallahassee as the new capital of Florida due to its central location and rich soils. This year, the city and the Bicentennial Steering Committee Members set out to offer a year of looking back at the city’s history while looking ahead to celebrate all that’s to come.
This is the perfect time to learn the history of the city from the first schools to the civil rights pioneers that helped change our nation.
A variety of activities are planned, including nature walks at historic sites, festivals, reenactments and community celebrations.
