Congress is working on reauthorization for the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) and they have a Sept. 30 deadline.
While the NFIP has been around for more than 50 years, today it is fraught with issues that have caused it to incur more than $20 billion in debt, while creating a weaker and less modern option for millions of families.
With Congress paying due attention to this important but broken program, the opportunity for critical reforms that increase funding for mapping, prioritize dollars for pre-disaster mitigation and ensure families are informed with required flood risk disclosure cannot be overlooked.
