The Florida House, Senate, and Governor are proposing measures to help ensure the horrific Feb. 14 shootings at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School never happen again. Students’ impassioned speeches, poems, songs and statements helped inspire new legislation currently being debated in Florida’s legislature. Proposals include:
• Raising the age limit to buy a rifle from 18 to 21
• Waiting three days to purchase all types of firearms
• Banning bump stocks
• Allowing trained school employees to become armed “marshals”
• Increasing number of school resource officers
• Targeting more resources for mental health services
Estimated costs to implement? $400-500 million. Saving lives? Priceless.
