Gardasil, a vaccine that protects against cancers caused by human papillomavirus, is now approved for people between 27 and 45 years old. It was previously approved for women younger than 26 and men younger than 21.
“It protects against nine types of HPV, so if you have one of the types, you still can be protected from other HPV types,” Dr. Lois M. Ramondetta, a gynecologic oncology professor at MD Anderson Cancer Center said in an interview with the New York Times.
Australia may be the first country to eliminate cervical cancer through vaccination, according to a public health journal.
