Nearly 230 years ago this week, the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) was established with the signing of the Buttonwood Agreement in a meeting of 24 New York City stockbrokers on May 17, 1792.
What began as an attempt to formalize the exchange of securities under a Buttonwood Tree in southern Manhattan has evolved over the centuries into the world’s largest and arguably most powerful stock exchange, hitting $30 trillion in market capitalization in 2018.
Today, the New York Stock Exchange has more than 2,400 listed companies and handles average daily trading of more than one billion stock shares.
