A day in Florida history: The Battle of Natural Bridge

by
Tallahassee Historic Site

On March 6, 1865, Confederate troops fought for control over the Natural Bridge that stretches along the St. Marks River.

After gaining control, the Confederate Army stopped the Union Army from capturing the Florida capital and pronounced Tallahassee the only Confederate capital east of the Mississippi River free from capture by the Union forces – marking The Battle of Natural Bridge one of the most important Civil War battles in Florida.

Natural Bridge Battlefield Historic State Park hosts a reenactment every March. Join the Leon Rifles and the U.S. Colored Troops Reenactment Unit for this year’s reenactment March 3-4.
