On Aug. 26, we’ll celebrate 97 years since the 19th Amendment was ratified. Sadly, Florida didn’t affirm the amendment until 1969, which is even more reason to commemorate those who donned white dresses and sashes for women’s suffrage.
Women like Ella C. Chamberlain from Tampa who began the Florida Woman Suffrage Association in 1893 and Rev. Mary A. Safford and Caroline Mays Brevard who established the Florida Equal Suffrage Association in 1913 in Orlando.
Many women today are pillars of strength for younger generations. It’s wonderful to know Florida women helped build the foundation on which these pillars stand.
