Rep. Jason Shoaf filed a bill this week that would expand retirement benefits to most state employees working in prisons, beyond just guards and wardens. HB 1089 revises the Special Risk Class of the Florida Retirement System to include educators, librarians and translators as well as many trade workers, such as electricians.
The bill states such employees must spend at least 75% of his or her time performing duties that involve contact with inmates. The Special Risk Class currently includes law enforcement, firefighters and certain other state employees. Class members may retire earlier with full benefits compared to non-class members.
