Sept. 4 is National Wildlife Day

by
National Wildlife Day

National Wildlife Day, founded by Colleen Paige in 2006, is celebrated each year on Sept. 4. The goal of the holiday is to bring awareness to the number of endangered animals nationally as well as globally.

Paige chose the Sept. 4 date after the passing of Australian TV host and conservationist Steve Irwin. However, she felt that one day was not enough to celebrate his life-long dedication to animals. As a result, Feb. 22, Irwin’s birthday, was added as the second National Wildlife Day.

In Irwin’s memory, spend time today learning about how you can contribute to conservation efforts.
