After South Florida survived Hurricane Irma in September 2017, rebuilding Monroe County’s affordable housing seemed almost impossible. The median monthly rent in Monroe County is $3,500, which exceeds the median monthly household income.

The Florida Keys Community Land Trust was founded immediately after Irma and focused on developing privately funded, permanently affordable rental housing. The project has built four new 760-square-foot cottages that are elevated 12 feet off the ground, are engineered to withstand 200 mph winds and have a monthly rent capped at $1,588.

The trust plans to build 20 new affordable homes next year.
