Tallahassee bids farewell to the Silver Slipper

Silver Slipper

Tallahassee said a final goodbye this month to the iconic Silver Slipper restaurant, a legendary steakhouse from a bygone era of legislative dealmaking. While the restaurant closed in 2009, the building off North Monroe was finally demolished.

Noted for private booths, excellent service, as well as where a knowing person could get a cocktail in dry Tallahassee, the Silver Slipper’s original restaurant opened in 1938, about a mile south of the Capitol.

Four generations of the Kalfas family operated it for over 70 years, until rules banning paid meals for legislators made the expense account a relic of the past.
