Honoring our fallen soldiers for Memorial Day? Make sure to hang the flag correctly. According to the Department of Veterans’ Affairs, it should be at half-staff from sunrise until noon, then at the top until sunset.
Originally called Decoration Day, the holiday recognized those lost during the Civil War.
In 1868, veteran leader General John A. Logan called for a remembrance of fallen heroes in the Civil War. In the first celebration, over 20,000 graves were decorated by 5,000 participants at Arlington National Cemetery. Following World War I, the observance evolved to commemorate military personnel that died in all wars.
