Florida TaxWatch released its “2019 Budget Turkey Watch Report,” promoting additional oversight and integrity in the state’s budgeting process.
The report is based on the principle that because money appropriated by the Legislature belongs to the taxpayers of Florida, the process must be transparent and accountable, and every appropriation should receive proper deliberation and public debate.
What’s a budget turkey? Budget turkeys are individual appropriations, often local member projects, placed in final appropriations bills without being scrutinized and subjected to the budget committee process. They also may have circumvented existing grant or other review processes.
