I’d always wanted to see Lake Okeechobee, but I hadn’t made the time to visit despite living only a few hours away for nearly 20 years.
Seeing the nation’s third-largest lake was worth it. Some tips for visiting it:
– Pack a bike. The 110-mile Lake Okeechobee Scenic Trail wraps around the lake on a elevated dike.
– Go early. There isn’t much shade along the trail or pier, so plan to visit in early morning or late afternoon.
– Explore small towns along the way. In Okeechobee, walk historic Main Street and stop in Lakeside Grill for a homestyle meal.
