The board game

Invented by an out-of-work architect in 1933, the game of Scrabble became an American pastime after a rebranding and subsequent discovery by the president of Macy’s department stores in the early 1950s.

My parents were big Scrabble players. I remember my mother being especially competitive, with a Webster’s Dictionary readily at hand to challenge some word she was certain my father had concocted. It was a rite of passage in my house to be deemed worthy to sit at the table, draw the tiles and compete.
