The name alone is intriguing, but when you get a glimpse of the pineberry, you almost have to know more. What looks like a run-of-the-mill strawberry — just all white — is actually a variation of the fruit that’s brand new to Florida.
Dr. Vance Whitaker, a strawberry breeder with the University of Florida Institute for Food and Agricultural Science’s Manatee County extension, partnered with G&D Farms to cultivate the pineberry. He cross bred seeds from a Japanese plant with strawberries typically found in state, and before he knew it, they were ready for commercialization.
