State employees will have something to cheer about when the 2023-24 budget year begins Saturday: a 5% pay raise. In addition to the across-the-board raise, lawmakers included several other pot-sweeteners in the 2023-24 budget.
The biggest is a $97 million pot of money for state agencies to spend on targeted raises or to recruit and retain employees.
Department of Corrections (DOC) employees will get added attention – prison guard starting pay will rise to $45,760 a year and DOC teachers and maintenance staff will also get a pay bump.
Additionally, assistant state attorneys and public defenders can expect fatter checks too.
