As Florida’s Chief Financial Officer, I am proud to also serve as State Fire Marshal.
More than 15% of firefighters reported having made at least one suicide attempt during their time in the fire service, compared to approximately 2% of the U.S. adult population. This is alarming and what I’m fighting to change during the 2018 Legislative Session. Currently, mental health isn’t covered under workers’ compensation and it should be. First responders help us without question. Our state has a responsibility to help them get the treatment they need without the enormous cost.
It is time Florida steps up.
