The president’s speech focused on his acceptance of the terms of the soon-to-be-signed San Francisco Peace Treaty. Signed by 48 nations on Sept. 8, 1951, the San Francisco Peace Treaty officially ended the post-war occupation of Japan by allied forces.
Just four years before he delivered this historic transcontinental televised speech in 1951, President Truman had achieved another first, in 1947, when he delivered the first televised White House address.
