Mission San Luis Offers Rich History

by

More than 400 years ago, Tallahassee was home to one of the first Spanish missions established in Florida. As the Spanish sought to establish territory throughout Florida, the purpose of the mission was to incorporate natives into the Spanish colonial empire, the Catholic religion and the Spanish culture.

The Spanish and Tallahassee-area natives, known as the “Apalachees,” lived together in and around Mission San Luis for three decades before eventually being overtaken by the English.

Today, San Luis is the only reconstructed mission in Florida and the most extensively investigated – both historically and archaeologically – in the southeastern United States.
