The Festival of Lights

Hanukkah is a Jewish holiday that spans eight days and commemorates the rededication of the Holy Temple in Jerusalem. Called the “festival of lights,” Hanukkah celebrations center on the Menorah, a candelabrum holding nine candles. Eight candles represent each day of the festival, and a ninth candle acts as a “helper” light to kindle the others.

Special foods, typically fried, are made for the holiday, such as potato pancakes, jelly donuts and challah bread. In addition to lighting the Menorah, festivities like spinning of dreidels (tops) and holy services take place.

Celebrate Hanukkah through Chabad Lubavitch of the Panhandle-Tallahassee.
