The Stars and Stripes. Old Glory. Star-Spangled Banner. These are but a few monikers for which patriots have lived to honor and died to defend.
Why the 14th? It was June 14, 1777, that the Continental Congress replaced the British symbols of the Grand Union flag with a new design featuring 13 white stars in a circle on a field of blue and 13 red/white stripes.
President Wilson issued a proclamation calling for a nationwide observance in 1916. It didn’t become official until August 1949, when President Truman signed the legislation proclaiming June 14 as Flag Day.
