Dictionary.com announced “misinformation” comes in first place as 2018’s word of the year, following “complicit” from last year. Misinformation is defined as “false information that is spread, regardless of whether there is intent to mislead.”

Not to be confused with disinformation, the choice of misinformation was deliberate, “intended to serve as a ‘call to action’ to be vigilant in the battle against fake news.”

Runners-up as top-searched words on the website throughout the year include: mainstream, white lie, Orwellian, representation, self-made and backlash. You can learn more about the popularity of these words in 2018 here.
